Reconditioning Programs

Get back to work, quickly, with Work Reconditioning — an intensive, goal-oriented treatment program.

Work Reconditioning is specifically designed to restore an individual’s systemic, neurological, musculoskeletal (strength, endurance, movement, flexibility, and motor control), and cardiopulmonary functions. The objective of the Work Reconditioning Program is to restore the client’s physical capacity and function to the extent that the client can return to work.

Elite starts with thorough physiotherapy assessment, including standard outcomes measures and functional testing.

  1. How Reconditioning differs from a regular physiotherapy appointment:
Set schedule of 3 to 5 days of the in the clinic for a specific number of weeks or appointments.

  2. Programs include core stability and functional training along with aerobic training.

  3. Simulate the work environment by training for the physical demands of the work environment.

  4. Program is supervised by a specialized physiotherapy in Reconditioning who has regular contact with case manager.

Workplace & Vehicle Injuries

We don’t just rehabilitate athletes. Our Winnipeg physiotherapy clinics are taking appointments now for vehicle related and work related injuries. If you are suffering from whiplash, repetitive strain, aches, pains, or other symptoms, we’ll help you with your WCB and MPI claims.

PRE/POST-OP Rehabilitation

Physiotherapists are expertly skilled in both inpatient and outpatient management of pre- and post-operative rehabilitation to ensure a safe return to activities of daily life, recreational activity, sports and work. Elite Sports Injury Physiotherapists will work with your surgical team and surgical protocol to get your plan underway.

  • Total joint replacements
  • Spinal surgery
  • Arthroscopies
  • Ligament and tendon repair
  • Fixation rehabilitation
  • Nerve releases or relocations
  • Joint fusions

After an operation, a patient has two main goals: 1) to avoid potential complications, and 2) to get back to pain-free living as quickly as possible. Physiotherapists help patients reach their goals by creating individualized rehab plans. These plans often include:

  • Education (including gait re-education, guidance for self-management techniques and recovery timeframes, etc).
  • Pain management
  • Modalities (ie: ultrasound, tens, etc).
  • Manual therapy (including joint mobilizations and soft tissue work).
  • Exercise (including range of motion, strength, balance, cardiovascular, posture, etc).
  • Personalized home exercise program.

These individualized plans are, typically, put into action the day after a surgical procedure takes place and continue once a patient returns home. (The length of physiotherapy rehab will vary from patient to patient.)

In general, a patient will get from a physiotherapy rehab program what he or she puts into it.

Pre-operative rehabilitation is not always suggested but we ALWAYS recommend it to ensure a surgical procedure has the best possible outcome.

A key benefit of a pre-operative rehab program is it not only strengthens muscles, but it can reduce the recovery time post operation. Additionally, pre-operative rehabilitation program improves balance, reduces the risk of falls, encourages weight loss/reduces strain on joints, improves fitness, and gets a patient comfortable with the exercises he or she will be performing during the post-op rehab phase of recovery.

Athletic Therapy

Clients can range from the weekend warrior to an individual with a workplace injury. Though athletic therapists are usually seen as first-responders on the field at major games and tournaments, they also use their knowledge in a clinical setting. With knowledge in anatomy, exercise physiology and biomechanics, athletic therapists are able to effectively prevent, treat, and rehabilitate chronic or acute injuries.

By using various manual therapies, modalities, taping techniques and exercise prescription, athletic therapists help you get back to your daily life. That can mean getting back into training for a competitive tournament or walking your dog. Whatever your finish line, our athletic therapists will help you reach it.

Neurological Physiotherapy

Provides assessment and treatment for patients who have physical impairments caused by injury or disorder affecting the brain and nervous system.

Some of the conditions that we treat include:
Stroke
Acquired Brain Injury
Multiple Sclerosis
Parkinson’s Disease
Balance and Mobility Issues
Difficulty in Walking
Benefits of Neurologica

Neurological disorders cause a disruption to the signals travelling from the brain to the body which can then affect impairment to movement and function.

Neurological Physiotherapy aims to stimulate the nervous system through various activities and exercises to develop new connections and pathways. Not only does this help with a patient’s mobility related disorders, it helps gain an improved quality of life through:

  • New movement strategies
  • Improved walking
  • Better balance and coordination
  • Increased stamina
  • Improved strength and endurance
  • Optimized independence

Treatment is performed through one-on-one care and customized to your condition and goals.

Book your Neurological Physiotherapy appointment today at our Elite Sports Injury Transcona location. Call us at 204-926-2219 or book your appointment online with Lauren Kerr, at our Elite Sports Injury Transcona location.

Movement Screening

Whether you are rehabilitating from an injury or condition, wanting to increase your level of physical activity, training for a competition or want to start exercising, our Elite physiotherapists can help you get there.

Cook, in the 1980’s, concluded that strength and flexibility weren’t reliable predictors of injury. You could be in good shape and still get injured at the same rates as those are not.

Functional Movement Screen Tests include Deep Squat, Hurdle Step, In-Line Lunge, Shoulder Mobility, Active Straight Leg Raise, Trunk Stability Push-Up, and Rotary Stability.

Exercises can be prescribed based on test results to correct weakness or imbalance.

  • Biomechanics Assessment to identify and address movement skill issues and overuse problems, and to help athletes achieve the highest level of efficiency through strength, flexibility, movement, and cardiovascular endurance assessments.

  • Development of an individual reconditioning program, with schedules for incrementally increasing the intensity, frequency, and duration of activities.

  • Development of a home exercise program.

  • Dynamic lumbar stabilization program.

  • Pain management education tailored to each individual.

  • Final evaluation with discharge recommendations.

Vestibular Rehabilitation

Do you suffer from dizziness?

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the world’s most popular medical treatment. It has been conducted for nearly 5000 years, and is widely used to reduce and relieve pain and to speed up the healing process. Certified physiotherapists at Elite Sports Injury physiotherapy clinics use acupuncture as needed in your customized physiotherapy treatment plan

Acupuncture treatments involve specific placement of ultra-thin needles on the body’s acupuncture points, which are areas of acute electrical sensitivity, allowing stimulation of nerves that tell the brain to release endorphins.

Each acupuncture point used in treatment (also referred to as “acupoints”) is in an area that is related to the location of the pain that needs to be resolved. When the needles are stimulated by the physiotherapist — by hand, heat, or electricity — the released endorphins help to manage the pain in that area. Only sterile, disposable acupuncture needles are used.

While acupuncture can be used for a variety of illnesses, it is most commonly used in the treatment of acute and chronic pain, muscle inflammation and tenderness, muscle spasms, and headaches.

TCM Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese Medicine is one of the oldest systems of medicine. It is based on the ancient belief that a vital energy, “Qi,” surges through the body and performs multiple functions to maintain health. TCM practitioners believe that chronic pain and illness results from blockage or imbalance of Qi, and that their role is to correct or balance its flow through treatment specific to the individual.

Acupuncture is the practice of inserting and manipulating thin stainless steel needles into the superficial skin, subcutaneous tissue, and muscles of the body at specific acupuncture points. In TCM, there are over 500 acupuncture points on the human body, which are connected by meridians. These meridians conduct Qi between the surface of the body and its internal organs. Acupuncture is believed to keep the balance between Yin (associated with the parasympathetic nervous system) and the Yang (associated with the sympathetic nervous system). This allows for the normal flow of Qi associated with neural transmission throughout the body and restores health to the mind and body.

At times, TCM acupuncture may be combined with cupping, gua-sha, ultrasound therapy, heat-lamp, kinesio taping, and or electroacupuncture, which is the process of applying an electrical current to the needles once they are inserted. This may be used to further stimulate the respective acupuncture points and often can be used to replace manipulation of needles. Electroacupuncture has been found to be especially effective in treating neuromuscular disorders

  • Mental-emotional: Anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia
  • Upper respiratory tract: Acute sinusitis, acute rhinitis, common cold, acute tonsillitis
  • Respiratory system: Acute bronchitis, bronchial asthma (most effective in children and in patients without complicated disease)
  • Disorders of the eye and ears: Tinnitus, sore eyes
  • Disorders of the mouth: Toothache, post extraction pain, gingivitis, acute and chronic pharyngitis
  • Gastro-intestinal disorders: Constipation, diarrhea, spasms of the esophagus and cardia, gastroptosis, gastritis, gastric hyperacidity
  • Neurological and musculoskeletal disorders: Headache, migrane, trigeminal neuralgia, facial palsy (early stage, i.e. within six months), pareses following a stroke, peripheral neuropathies, nocturnal enuresis (bed-wetting), intercostal neuralgia, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, sciatica, low-back pain, osteoarthritis
  • Today’s science shows acupuncture can also be used effectively in: Adverse reactions to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, allergies, blood pressure problems, infertility, sexual dysfunction (low libido, erectile dysfunction), breach position in pregnancy, induction of labour, rheumatoid arthritis.

Western medical acupuncture as used by physiotherapists as part of their patient treatment plan is primarily used to treat symptoms of musculoskeletal pain.

TCM acupuncture by a certified Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncturist is designed to treat the whole body as a system, root cause, as well as symptoms depending on TCM diagnosis, differentiation, and treatment protocols. Some of the modern TCM acupuncture techniques were created scientifically, such as neuropuncture and scalp acupuncture (needling along the brain map).

Prior to arrival, you will need to fill out a confidential initial intake form of your health history. This will be administered to you via your personal account online to fill out. If you prefer to fill it out in person, please arrive 15 – 20 minutes prior to your appointment time.

Wear or bring comfortable shorts

Initial assessment will take 60 minutes, including counseling, pulse and tongue diagnosis, and treatment. Please do not eat or drink strong coloured food (coffee, blueberries) or brush your tongue on the day of your appointment so as to have an accurate tongue diagnosis.

TCM acupuncture practitioners use 5 basic methods of diagnosis in their assessments: inspection (looking), auscultation (listening), olfaction (smelling), inquiry (asking), and palpation (touching).

The acupuncture points will be selected based on your health history information and your acupuncturist’s thorough consultation.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is like a reset button for your muscles. It helps to quickly relax tight muscles, improve blood flow, decrease pain and improve functional movement.

Dry needling is a neurophysiological evidence-based treatment technique that requires effective manual assessment of the neuromuscular system. Our certified physiotherapists at Winnipeg’s Elite Physiotherapy clinics are well trained to utilize dry needling to complement other physiotherapy interventions like manual therapy, patient education and corrective exercise prescription.

Dry needling uses fine needles to stimulate myofascial trigger points and functional anatomy. Trigger points are small, tight areas of muscle located within a larger muscle group that are known to “trigger” or refer pain to distant parts of the body. Dry needling works by stimulating the selected trigger point and functional anatomy to release the tightened muscle resulting in pain relief and increased muscle function. Your physiotherapist may briefly piston the needle up and down before removal or use electrical stimulation on the needles to achieve these treatment goals.

Dry needling can treat a variety of pain, both acute and chronic. It may be used as part of your customized and comprehensive treatment plan to effectively manage conditions like neck and back pain, strains and sprains, nerve injuries and many more.

Custom Orthotics

Custom orthotics are shoe inserts that are moulded to your feet, helping to relieve high pressure areas by stabilizing and cushioning your feet to restore normal gait. This helps to decrease joint and muscle pain in the lower body and back, and can be used to relieve symptoms of many common injuries including tendonitis, ankle injuries, metatarsalgia, plantar fasciitis, arthritis, diabetes, and more.

If you are experiencing pain while walking or running, while standing for long periods, or while playing sports, you may need custom orthotics. Orthotics come in a variety of styles and easily fit into dress or running shoes, work boots, hockey skates, and most other footwear.

Note: Orthotics will not permanently change your anatomy and will function only when you are standing or walking on them.

Get an assessment for custom orthotics at our St. James, Downtown, or Bridgwater locations.

Schroth Therapy

Scoliosis, which means “crooked” in Greek, is a 3-dimensional abnormality of the spine, and affects about 3% of people. In a “normal” spine when looking from the side has an “S” shaped curve from the head to the tailbone. When looking from the front to back view, the spine is straight.

With scoliosis, the curve from the front to back view now can become “C” or “S” shaped, and the side view becomes straight.  The spine also twists within the side-to-side curves.

Physical signs of scoliosis can include:

  • Uneven shoulders
  • Uneven waist
  • Uneven hips/pelvis
  • One side of the ribs that stick out more than the other
  • One side of the lower back that sticks out farther than the other

The majority of those that have scoliosis are due to an unknown cause, called “idiopathic scoliosis.” Occasionally, however, scoliosis is caused by an illness, infection, injury, or birth defect. As scoliosis progresses, permanent deformation of the spine can occur, and the spine can become fixed.  Other symptoms such as pain, difficulty breathing, osteoarthritis, depression, anxiety, decreased self-esteem, and decreased quality of life become more apparent.

A person cannot diagnose his/herself with scoliosis; a medical doctor must do that through X-ray imaging.

Depending on the severity of the curve, scoliosis can be treated through bracing, corrective surgery, or scoliosis specific physiotherapy exercises such as the Schroth Method.

Schroth 3D Scoliosis Therapy, founded in Germany in 1921, is an exercise-based method of treatment with the main goals of:

  • Deceleration or prevention of further spinal curve progression
  • Avoidance of surgery
  • Body symmetry and cosmetic improvements
  • Postural awareness and control
  • Increase chest/rib cage mobility and respiratory functions
  • Support for bracing if needed

Scoliosis specific exercises like the Schroth Method have been shown to improve scoliosis outcomes when used by itself, as well as in a combination with bracing or surgery.  When scoliosis is detected early enough, Schroth can attempt and succeed at restoring a level of normal spinal alignment.

Schroth 3D Scoliosis Therapy is a series of individually tailored postural variations and exercises combined with breathing techniques.  The expectation is these techniques will be applied through a home exercise program, as well as in everyday activities.  Motivation, commitment, and compliance of individuals who are receiving therapy is needed in order to see success and long-term postural changes.  Depending on the type of scoliosis, and age of the patient, therapy can be expected to be months, to years, to lifelong.

Paula Sather MPT, BSc Kin, Certified in CSCS, ISST Schroth Therapist is one of few Physiotherapists is the province providing this type of therapy to those with scoliosis and Scheuermann’s kyphosis.  Individuals of any curve type, and any age can book in and benefit from this type of therapy.

Booking an assessment will also require booking in additional follow up appointments

This is to ensure timely and appropriate management of one’s therapy.  Schroth therapy can be intensive initially, but is done to guarantee therapy is done as intended.

ACL Rehabilitation

Our comprehensive and research informed group rehabilitation program is designed to help individuals with knee injuries, including ACL injuries, meniscus injuries, other traumatic knee injuries, and postoperative rehabilitation.

The Strong Strides: ACL Rehabilitation Group Program by Elite Sports Injury integrates the principles of rehabilitation with strength and conditioning to optimize your outcomes and get you back to the activities that you love.

Find support, a sense of camaraderie, and accountability in being part of our programs

“This class gives participants the opportunity to interact with other patients that are preparing to return to play and provides a real strong sense of teamwork. We have found this to be very effective in assisting athletes as they prepare to return into the team setting from which they have been away due to their ACL rehabilitation. Many patients have benefitted from this program format, and I strongly recommend this endeavor in Winnipeg.”

-DR. MARK SOMMERFELDT, M.D.,M.P.H., F.R.c.s.(C), BScPT, Dip. Sports Med. ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON

The Strong Strides program is a 6-week program, consisting of twice weekly exercise sessions led by a physiotherapist and our experienced support team. Each of the twelve one-hour sessions will have participants working through an evidence-based exercise program to address the deficits that are commonly seen with knee injuries. Our injury prevention program also utilizes validated testing equipment and protocols to help ensure individuals can remain up to date on their individual progress throughout their rehabilitation journey.  This allows participants to make an informed decision to return to the sports and activities that are important to them.

Research shows:

  • With every 1% increase in quads strength, risk for re-injury decreases by 3%
  • Pivoting sport athletes who pass specific criteria prior to return to sport have 4–6 times lower risk for re-injury
  • Athletes who pass Return to Sport testing have 84% lower re-injury rate.

Strong Strides consists of multiple levels that are appropriate to suit any individual’s needs, regardless of where they are on their rehabilitation journey.

Levels 1 and 2: Appropriate for anyone looking to improve their confidence with lifting weights and incorporating necessary strength and conditioning work into their rehabilitation plan. Level 1 will teach safe and effective strength training principles and Level 2 will introduce more advanced principles for individuals looking to push themselves towards specific goals or hoping to return to sport in their future.

Level 3: Designed to incorporate advanced skills and drills for return to higher risk activities and sports. This level will teach individuals how to maintain their strength and introduce more dynamic movements such as sprinting (acceleration and deceleration), jumping, lateral movements and change of direction skills.

We mark and test your progress during each level and we use this data to create a plan that aids your progress towards your goals.

The Goal: Return to sport or active living safer, stronger, and better than ever with group training sessions with our physiotherapists and strength & conditioning specialists.

  • Return to sports or activity specific progressions and research informed testing methods to help reduce risk of re-injury.
  • Implementation of strength, power, and agility training throughout different phases of the program.
  • Each program will include education, a training program, fitness testing, and an individualized progress report.
  • State of the art equipment with physiological (VO2 Max) and metabolic testing to maximize conditioning / muscle growth & recovery, minimize loss of conditioning.
  • Education on quality of movement.
  • An affordable option compared to individualized programs. This program may be eligible for coverage by extended health benefits plans or can be a great transition from where insurance left off.
